About Medical Council of India | MCI india

Introduction



The Medical Council of India was established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, now repealed, with the main function of establishing uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and the recognition medical qualifications in India and abroad. The number of medical colleges has increased steadily over the years after independence. It was felt that the provisions of the Indian Medical Council was not sufficient to meet the challenges of rapid development and progress of medical education in the country. Accordingly, in 1956, the old law was repealed and a new order was issued. This was further amended in 1964, 1993 and 2001. The Council's objectives are as follows.

1. Maintenance of uniform standards of medical education, second or third cycle.

2. Recommendation for recognition and accreditation of medical qualifications of medical institutions of India or other countries.

3. Permanent registration / registration of doctors with medical qualifications,

4. Reciprocity with third countries on mutual recognition of medical qualifications.





Council Constitution



Under Article 3 (1) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, The Council consists of the following members, namely:

a. A member of a State other than the territory of the Union to be appointed by the central government in consultation with the relevant authorities.

b. One member of each university, which should be elected from the faculty of medicine at the University of members of the Senate of the University or the University has no Senate, by members of the Court.

v. One member of each Member State, a State Medical Register is required to be elected from among them persons who are registered in a register that have the medical qualifications in the first and second schedule or Part II of the third plan.

d. Seven members are elected from their midst, people who possess the medical qualifications included in Part I of Annex III.

e. Eight members are appointed by the central government.

The President and the Vice-President of the Council are elected by members of the Council from among their number.







Missions and objectives

1. Inspection / visits to maintain a good quality of medical education in India.

2. Permission to launch new medical colleges, new courses including PG or higher education, the increase of seats, etc.

4. Indian Medical Register

• Maintenance of All India Medical Register of persons in possession of a recognized medical qualifications or for the time being registered in one of the doctors or doctors of India.

5. Registration

a. Final registration

b. Provisional registration

v. The registration of additional qualification.

d. Issue certificates of good standing for doctors abroad.
